March 01, 2006 - Msg 2366: Goodbye to Don Knotts! I felt like he had a great face that he used to his advantage, when playing a character such as our beloved Barney. Yes, his eyes were also a big part of his facial expressions, too. His dance with the lady convict has to be one of my favorite scenes. How he could keep a straight face, as he tried to dance her out onto the porch cracks me up every time, because most of us would be laughing, if we had to do that scene.

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2367: kablooey! smash! that's our life now that ol' barn is gone. Thanks Don for too many laughs.

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2369: The Lord blessed me with an opportunity to meet Don in 1998 when they dedicated a stretch of highway to him in his hometown of Morgantown and one of the many great thing about him was that even though we just met he talked to me like we were friends for years. March 01, 2006 - Msg 2402: I grew up in N.C. not far from Mt. Airy and I loved watching the Andy Griffin Show. Barney was the funniest deputy with his one bullet in his shirt pocket!! The show was not only funny but reminded us of down home country people in a small town. Even though small town people all over the country could relate, we were very proud of Mayberry and the characters from the show. May "Barney" (Don Knotts) always be remembered as a breath of fresh air-- always with a good chuckle!

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2408: We miss you already. I just felt better knowing you were in the world. I'm sure your family is so proud of the legacy you have left behind...what a testament to your talent and your personal character.

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2409: When my Dad passed away in 1978, he died a County Police Officer in Hohenwald, Tennessee. He was dedicated to his job, just as Barney was. I can remember that at one time in his career, he drove a Ford Galaxie Squad Car, just like Barney drove. Many folks called him, "Barney." In 1985 I started my career in Law Enforcement and the last two yrs I have served as a Deputy Sheriff. My friends and family call me "Barney" a lot. My sister teases me all the time, asking me, "Barney, do you got your bullet in your pocket?" I consider it a proud honor to be put in the same bracket with Deputy Barney Fife. When I die, I hope I go out with half as much respect that folks had for my Dad and Barney. When my Dad died, I can just picture God meeting him at the Pearly Gates with him a Squad Car to drive. Now that Barney has passed on, I know that he is riding along with my Dad on patrol. Deputy Barney Fife---I will never forget you and I thank you for all the laughs you gave me and the lessons I learned from you. I look forward to meeting up with you and my Dad so that I can ride with y'all May your soul rest in peace.

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2410: All is quiet in Mayberry today...

Rarely does a fictional character -- let alone an entire fictional town -- become so entrenched in people's hearts. But how thankful we all can be that he left us such a marvelous legacy of laughter and memories... Thanks, Barn. We love you and miss you...

With all due respects to the genius that Don Knotts was, we owe a tremendous graditude to the WRITERS of the show. The scripts were brilliant and when those early writers left, and Barney was out, the show failed miserably in my eyes. A Superb cast! No show since has matched the quality of this one!

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2426: Barney Fife was a part of a better, simpler time when one could watch TV and not be bombarded with the s-e-x, drugs, and rock and roll mentality that is so prevalent today. Lord knows that I would rather be a participant in the lives of Barney, Andy, Gomer, Goober, Opie, and all the other wonderful characters in Mayberry then to have to put up with the women of Wisteria Lane. I lift my cup up to good times and remembering the legacy of Don Knotts, a true prince who will continue to live on within our memories (not to mention "re-runs). We love ya' and will miss ya'!

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2430: "Oh, My Darin' Barney Fife"
(Sung to the melody of "Oh, My Darlin' Clementine")
In a jailhouse, down in Dixie, fightin' crime and riskin' life,
Dwelled a sheriff and his buddy, pistol-packing Barney Fife.
Oh, my darin', oh, my darnin' oh, my darin' Barney Fife.
He's a deadly crime-stopper, what a copper Barney Fife.

Then one day there come a-ridin' two bad men to rob a bank.
But Fife was tricky, a dead-eye dickey. Now they're locked up in the tank.

(Andy added the following)
Oh, my Barney, oh, my Barney, had a jail and couldn't lock it.
Had one bullet for his pistol, had to keep it in his pocket.

I have to say, when I was in eigth grade we had a science teacher, Mr. Madeya, who would always tell us "Nip it!" and we would always finish with "in the bud" because we all grew up watching Barney.

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2454: As I sit here beginning to write still another tribute to Don Knotts ("Barney") I looked down at my mouse pad and there he is along with Andy, Gomer and little Opie. Barney is posed with a sling shot, loaded and aimed at me. I am of course recalling the time he was showing off his talents of "trick shooting" to little Opie. All around our house are reminders of this talented man, as I'm sure is the case of so many others. It occurred to me, I might want to put this mouse pad up and preserve it????? Nah!! I'm going to keep it out, use it and enjoy "Barney" looking back at me every day as I sit at my computer.
Thanks for the memories our dear Don!

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2473: Everyone always says that comedy is harder then drama. This being true, then for five years in the 60's, Don Knotts was the greatest actor on the planet.

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2474: You may not be physically around but you will last forever...

A true star!

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2475: I could watch a hundred times over Andy and Barney sitting on the front porch in the evening, Andy strumming along, Aunt Bee bustling about in the kitchen...Ahhh the good old days .. Bon Voyage old friend....

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2476: In our lifetime we travel many roads. Fortunately my road crossed with Don Knotts/Barney Fife on the TV screen and once over his intercom in Beverly Hills. What a thrill it was just to hear his voice and have him talk to me. There will never be another like him. Don and his character of Barney Fife come once in a lifetime and I am thankful he could be part of my life. God bless Don Knotts and his family.

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2477: It was with great saddness that I learned of Don's passing. His portrayal of Deputy Barney Fife on the old Andy Griffith Show reminded us all of a kinder and gentler time and place that will never be seen again. I wish I could again stroll the streets of Mayberry, but sadly the old RKO Forty Acres backlot that was used in filming the Mayberry scenes was torn down in 1976 and replaced by an industrial complex. I will greatly miss Don and his enormous talent. Thankfully I have an autograph from Don that will now become one of my most cherished possessions. Rest in peace my friend. Bill in Omaha.

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2478: TV Land has said it right!! Don Knotts was a friend to us all. So many times, we have shared a funny memory of THE SHOW with our friends and have had many, many laughs. This good clean humor is something we truly lack today.

We sure do envy the "governor" because we never got to shake your hand and tell you what a fine job you did..."bless your heart". You, nor any of the catch-phrases you popularized (i.e., "Nip it -- nip it in the bud!")will ever be forgotten. God bless and comfort your family and those of us who felt as if we were.

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2488: As someone posted, "Barney" will live forever, like John Wayne and Bob Hope. Our local newspaper printed a charming editorial cartoon yesterday in which "Barney"--bug-eyed as usual--is trapped behind the Pearly Gates. "Floyd" tells him, "Relax, Barney, for once you locked yourself in the right place!"
I was always struck at how many episodes revolved around folks trying to spare Barney's feelings. Example: the classic choral solo shown last night on TVLand. How rare these days to see simple kindness and compassion spotlighted. I'd wish you rest well, dear friend, but I rather think you'll be as other posters have said...patrolling Heaven, complete with that one bullet. Celia in Kansas.

March 01, 2006 - Msg 2501: my favorite Don Knotts was at the The Andy Griffith Show cast reunion in Winston-Salem, NC in 1995. It was when Don Knotts *took the stage*...there was such a thunderous applause like I have never heard.....and I've been to Rolling Stones concerts!!
During the autograph session, when it was finally my turn, I asked Don if he would be able to *personalize* a photo with an wife and I were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary....I asked him if he could write *to Mike and Patty, Happy tenth*...He seemed almost embarrassed to declined, saying that he was under such pressure to sign so many autographs that evening...he just didn't have the time to personalize any...even though he couldn't do it, he was so gracious and kind. and later, i realized that i was being selfish asking him to do it because the line to see him was like 10 times longer than any other of the *stars*. He did let us pose for a picture with him though, which i cherish!
There really just aren't words to describe the joy and pleasure that Don Knotts brought to people..I think his life is proof that God does exist!!
